Abstract
Purpose of Review
This review examines the framework and current evidence regarding regional collaboratives in the delivery of trauma care.
Recent Findings
The evolution of the learning health system challenges traditional quality improvement teachings. This vision calls for agile, evidence-based, best practice sharing across all stakeholders. A regional collaborative model answers the call for collaboration, assessment, and accountability. This framework enables participants to easily identify variability in care delivery and collaborate with multidisciplinary positive deviants. The fundamental hallmarks of a regional collaborative are data submission and aggregation, benchmark reporting, and peer-to-peer discussion. Advanced collaboratives may also offer unblinded benchmarking, risk- and reliability-adjusted analyses, provider-level feedback, and external data validation.
Summary
Participation in a regional collaborative is associated with improved data quality, outcomes, and mortality. Processes of care and cost savings in trauma care delivery are optimized. Collaborative data sharing can also be applied to gain insights on the impact of legislative changes and public health challenges of a region. Future research should examine the implications of collaboratives across all phases of the patient care experience to broadly leverage the power of collaborative momentum.
