P2Y2 Nucleotide Receptor Is a Regulator of the Formation of Cardiac Adipose Tissue and Its Fat-Associated Lymphoid Clusters
P2Y2 Nucleotide Receptor Is a Regulator of the Formation of Cardiac Adipose Tissue and Its Fat-Associated Lymphoid Clusters: Stem Cells and Development, Ahead of Print. AbstractThe formation of pericardial adipose tissue (PAT) and its regulatory function in cardiac inflammation are not well understood. We investigated the potential role of the ubiquitous ATP/UTP nucleotide receptor P2Y2 in the PAT by using P2Y2-null mice. We observed that P2Y2-null mice displayed a lower mass of PAT and a reduced...

Feature extraction and classification of heart sound using 1D convolutional neural networks
Feature extraction and classification of heart sound using 1D convolutional neural networks: AbstractWe proposed a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) model, which divides heart sound signals into normal and abnormal directly independent of ECG. The deep features of heart sounds were extracted by the denoising autoencoder (DAE) algorithm as the input feature of 1D CNN. The experimental results showed that the model using deep features has stronger anti-interference ability than...

Proposed Classification of Incision Complications: Analysis of a Prospective Study on Elective Open Lower-Limb Revascularization
Proposed Classification of Incision Complications: Analysis of a Prospective Study on Elective Open Lower-Limb Revascularization: Surgical Infections, Ahead of Print. AbstractBackground: Incision complications (IC) have a significant impact on procedure-related morbidity after lower-limb revascularization. One of the most studied IC is surgical site infection (SSI). Reporting these complications in a uniform way is crucial to evaluate treatment approaches. The aim of this study was to propose a comprehensive...

Reining in Sternal Wound Infections: The Achilles' Heel of Bilateral Internal Thoracic Artery Grafting
Reining in Sternal Wound Infections: The Achilles' Heel of Bilateral Internal Thoracic Artery Grafting: Surgical Infections, Ahead of Print. Background: Although the survival advantage of bilateral internal thoracic artery grafting (BITA) is well known in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), this technique has not been widely adopted. This is mainly because of the increased risk of deep sternal wound infections (DSWI) associated with its use. However, in recent years the overall...

Erythroferrone, the new iron regulator
Erythroferrone, the new iron regulator: evaluation of its levels in Egyptian patients with beta thalassemia: AbstractSince iron overload is the commonest cause of morbidity and mortality in β thalassemia major (β-TM), it represents one major target in therapeutic management of the disease. The recently discovered erythroid regulator, erythroferrone (ERFE), governed by high levels of erythropoietin, was found to suppress hepcidin expression, thus increasing iron availability for developing erythroid...

Transmembrane protease serine 5: a novel Schwann cell plasma marker for CMT1A
Transmembrane protease serine 5: a novel Schwann cell plasma marker for CMT1A: AbstractObjectiveDevelopment of biomarkers for Charcot‐Marie‐Tooth (CMT) disease is critical for implementing effective clinical trials. The most common form of CMT, type 1A, is caused by a genomic duplication surrounding the PMP22 gene. A recent report (Neurology 2018;90:e518–3524) showed elevation of neurofilament light (NfL) in plasma of CMT1A disease patients, which correlated with disease severity. However, no plasma/serum...

Trastuzumab in combination with AT-101 induces cytotoxicity and apoptosis in Her2 positive breast cancer cells.........................................Summary points The HER2 oncogene is overexpressed in 25–30% of all breast cancer cases and over expression of this oncogene is closely related to shortened disease-free survival. Treatment of these cancers is based on targeted drugs or combinations. Trastuzumab is a monoclonal targeted agent against HER2. The most important problem of trastuzumab is drug resistance, which may be primary or secondary. Thus, novel treatment options are required to break resistance mechanisms. AT-101(-/-Gossypol) is a polyphenolic compound having potent antiproliferative and apoptotic effects in various cancers. AT-101 also has been studied in breast cancer cell lines and demonstrated apoptotic effect of drug. In this cell culture study, two breast cancer cell lines (MDA-MB453 and SKBR-3), in which HER-2 is overexpressed, were used and MCF-10A was used as a control cell line. The drugs were applied to these cell lines alone or in combination and the effects of the drugs on the cells were investigated. Trastuzumab/AT101 combination showed a synergistic cytotoxic and apoptotic effect on both HER-2 positive breast cancer cell lines but not on control cells. Two pathways were studied that cause this effect. Combination treatment induced cytotoxicity via inhibiting PI3K/AKT but not the MAPK/ERK pathway. Trastuzumab/AT-101 combination may be a good candidate for patients with trastuzumab-resistant HER-2-positive breast cancer.

Effects of stress on functional connectivity during verbal processing: AbstractEffects of stress on functional connectivity (FC) in specific language processing regions of the brain during verbal fluency tasks were explored. Roles of gender and serotonin transporter gene polymorphisms (5-HTTLPR), associated with stress susceptibility, were also examined to understand their effect. Forty-five healthy volunteers (Mean age: 19.6 ± 1.6 years; 28 females) participated. Functional magnetic resonance imaging...

Resting-state causal connectivity of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis in panic disorder
Resting-state causal connectivity of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis in panic disorder: AbstractPanic disorder (PD) is associated with anticipatory anxiety, a sustained threat response that appears to be related to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST). Individuals with panic disorder may demonstrate significant differences in causal connectivity of the BNST in comparison to healthy controls. To test this hypothesis, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was...

Spleen Organoid Units Generate Functional Human and Mouse Tissue-Engineered Spleen in a Murine Model
Spleen Organoid Units Generate Functional Human and Mouse Tissue-Engineered Spleen in a Murine Model: Tissue Engineering Part A, Ahead of Print. AbstractIntroduction: Splenectomy is common after trauma or hematologic disease, and alters immune protection against pathogens, which may lead to fulminant infection with high mortality. Yet the spleen has demonstrable regenerative capacity and cells might be recovered and reimplanted at the time of injury or excision to avoid these risks. Methods: Tissue-engineered...
